An orphan who never knew his mother, Ceil was almost offered to Lolth as a babe. By some stroke of luck -- perhaps divine favor -- a priestess decided to task one of her students with raising him . . as a "character-building" experience, of course. From this early exposure, Ceil knows a bit more of the ways of Lolth's clerics than most males.

When he came of age he was sent to the Melee academy and became a respectable fighter. Nothing extraordinary, but not too bad either.

His weapons of choice became a large sword or mace-hammer, depending on the foe. By the time he graduated from the academy, no one cared enough to remember his past, and he became just another mercenary looking for work.

He kept that low profile for about a year. It was then he encountered a young Arshes'Maral in the caves of Abburth.

At this time she was relatively inexperienced, but apparently the only person left ambitious enough to lead Morcane and restore its power.

She needed more soldiers... Ceil seemed decent enough, so she offered him employment. He accepted gladly, and worked reasonably hard to be seen as worthy.

It was at this time Ceil's divine abilities slowly began to manifest themselves, but not in a conscious way. Initially they only had an effect when he was around Arshes, so he assumed it was her doing. But a few weeks later he noticed the same thing in the company of other females.

Confused, he didn't know whether he should approach Arshes about this. His first instinct was to hide it, deny everything, hope it would go away. Then he began having these dreams...

A very large metal helmet spun, suspended in pitch darkness, emitting enough light to be clearly visible. It was open-faced, and colored a very dark though slightly purplish blue, yet somehow polished to shine. It continued spinning, and spinning, and spinning... he dreamed this many different times having no idea what it meant.

Then one time, the helmet stopped spinning, facing him. Suddenly it was further away from him, and a towering figure appeared wearing it. It looked like a giant man -- certainly too stocky to be an elf -- and was covered in full plate that glistened, well polished with the same dark hue as the helmet. As quickly as it had appeared, the figure was gone...along with the helmet, and he would never see either again...

Ceil had never heard of anything quite like this, and was too afraid to ask, figuring it would be seen as crazy. Answers to his questions, it seemed, were not to be found in Szith...so he did the logical thing...

He left Szith. Splitting off from a patrol in the middle of some tense combat, he was presumed dead. This was an unusual step for him...Ceil was a rather obedient male (Lawful Evil-style) who normally wouldn't think to leave without permission, but some fate pulled him upwards.

Traveling with no particular destination in mind, Ceil focused his attention on avoiding trouble along the way. He arrived underneath Stone Peak by means of a narrow, seldom-used passage, which opened into a medium-sized cavern. As he emerged he heard shouts and many guttural sounds of fighting in the distance. His instinct was to turn back and stay safely away, but for some reason He quickened his pace and arrived just in time to see a dwarven miner struck down by a group of fell trolls. There were at least ten of them -- he didn't bother to count -- and a few meters away the dwarf's badly beat-up companion stood holding a pickaxe in one hand and a small handaxe in the other, struggling to hold off what looked to be three or four more trolls...but it was hard to tell with some having multiple heads.

At the same time, a stocky human whom Ceil initially mistook for another dwarf appeared from the other direction. He was wearing an open-faced helm similar to the one from Ceil's dream, except for the bright-red plumes lining it. This man -- whom Ceil later learned was a Priest of Helm named Mattheus Steen -- cried out as he charged towards the trolls around the second miner, apparently not noticing Ceil yet. A second later Ceil's own sword was out, and he spun into the mass of trolls around the first fallen miner. In less than a minute they were cut up pretty bad, and as Ceil unconsciously raised his left hand in a fist a fire storm engulfed the trolls around him. Gasping in shock and having no idea what just happened, he turned to see the second miner was now also down. Mattheus had taken care of the rest of the trolls and stood looking surprisingly unscathed, armor and plumes still gleeming unblemished as he stared back at Ceil.

Not sensing any more trolls nearby, Ceil extended his sword arm to the right and loosely finger gripped the bloodied thing with its point down. Raising his other palm open, he spoke undercommon: "I have no quarrel with you", then added in reasonably learned but unpracticed common: "Enough fighting". Mattheus hesitated for several seconds before nodding and getting down on one knee to check on the second miner, seeming to keep half his attention on Ceil as he did so.
