I put this over on the Szith boards but not getting any responces ill try here now.

Im trying to comeup with some ideas for the test of sorcere, in becomming an instructor. Im taking any suggestion or ideas for the test, please feel free to add in what you would like to see for the Tower.

I was thinking a 5 step test mostly dealing in some PvE, example:

1. Recover the king troll head

2. Fight an undead equal to or greater than char lvl

3. Face an elder Illithiad

4. Face a dragon (elder)

Please feel free to add in

sounds good so far... maybe even try to add in "the test" for a low lvl mage to prove that they are willing and capable of gaining the higher spells and knowing the dangers of them

DM garg and me came up with some good stuff this combind with what I got we should have a good testing system in the Tower Smile

The Tests -

1) Test of Knowledge. A generic test where the name of a 20 random spells are given to the student, and they must mention the correct school of magic it belongs to without looking at their spellbook.

2) Test of Arcane Aptitude. A test to measure their magical might. The players are allowed to memorize whatever spells they are allowed to do so, and are put against a creature that would be difficult for them to handle on their own. If the person in question is hoping to go after one of the specific schools of magic positions, they must compete in an additional second test using only that specialized school of magic that they are going for as a position, and will face a second difficult enemy as before that they must win against.

3) Test of Arcane Conflict. A duel that a student must undertake versus another player whom is near the same level as themselves. Typically two students whom have passed the first two tests are put up against one another, and can be the springboard to futher rivalries as no one likes loosing. The looser in this stage of the test must start again back at the 2nd test.

4) Test of the Weave Stone. The apprentice must attempt to smash a stone using their magical powers only. It matters not what spells are used, as long as it is only spells that are actually used and not scrolls or wands.

For a player that has completed these four basic tests, this means that they are no longer a apprentice of anykind and are now a full fledged member of sorcere. Here is where they could have some insigina or such to proove they are a full member of the academy and have passed all the basic tests and are no longer apprentices in training.

If the player wishes to go futher, and attempt to go for one of the Academy Head of School / Instructors positions, then after a break of at least a few months of real life time they then could maybe progress to the next stage of testing.

Firstly the player has to RP over the course of those few months the desire to become an instructor, and they must hone their skills and be quite knowledgeable about the school of magic they wish to teach. If its clear that the players isnt as such, either ic or oocly, or just isnt going to do the academy any good then the Arch-Mage could say no to them trying to be something more than just a normal member of Sorcere.

The Mage guild is predominatly male, this means they must be that much more impressive both intellectually and creatively to appear appealing to the other Matrons. If you had some retard standing there not doing the city or the drow any favours because they just dont have it, then the tower would probably end up being destroyed and all of you would possibly be excecuted publically.

The Tests to Earn Academy Positions.

A Core rule. Once you pick a school of magic to go for, you cant ever change it and go for something else. Your stuck with that choice you made for the entire life span of the character on the server. Also the current Archmage must also of given his permission for them to be allowed to go ahead with the advanced testing.

1) Test of knowledge. A Generic test where the member must speak out aloud the correct school of Magic to a list of 30 Spells without looking at their spellbook.

2) Test of Advanced Arcane Aptitude. Again this test measures their magical might. Because they are going for a specialist Head of the Academy, they must defeat a sequence of three difficult enemies using only that particular school of magic.

3) Test of Advanced Arcane Conflict. This is again a duel. It matters not what position or head of academy the advanced student is going for, they must challenge in a duel another player who has passed the earlier two advanced tests and has to around the same level as them. The looser of this battle has possibly a long wait on his hands as he returns to the 2nd test and cant even attempt the 3rd test again until the current Head of the School of Magic he was going for has been replaced by someone else who has beaten him in the following 4th test.

4) Test of Mastery. This is the final stage, and an opportunity for the winner of the previous duel to maybe be picked in a the last duel for leadership / instructorship of a particular Head of School of Magic. This does not have to be done immediately, and is organized at a time that suits the current Head of a particular School of Magic. Many advanced students at once may reach this phase, and only one of the candidates going for that position that has reached this stage is picked to challenge the head of a school by the Head of that school themselves.

For those not picked to fight for Mastery, they return to the 3rd test again, and cannot even attempt to do that 3rd test until the current head of that school of magic has been replaced by someone else. The player picked by the current head of that school to fight is typicaly one that the master will be able to win against easily and keep hold of the position they have. The current Head of a School must fight at a minimum of one such fight per real life month if any advanced students going for their position have reached this 4th test.

Eventually how this system works is.. All members have a chance to become a full member of Sorcere as long as new members keep coming through the doors. Eventually they will get the chance to become one, and someone will always loose which should trigger off various RP rivalries.

For the advanced students, as long as a Master keeps winning their fights once a month, players will eventually become trapped at a specific phase of the tests until he is beaten by someone else. As soon as this occurs they can all fight each other again from stage 3 in the advanced tests, and one of them will go on to being picked to challenge the currently newish head of that school which they were originally going for.

As to how the Archmage is chosen. This is something that the current Valsharess should pick, as that player has control as to whom can go beyond being a normal member of Sorcere and challenge for the positions of Instructor / Head of a particular school.. and reports directly to all the Matrons if requested and the Valsharess once per month on who is what and if there are any changes to the current Heads of Schools.

If the Archmage makes an error, and allows someone who isnt suited to the job to go for Head of school then thats on his head. Any poor or inaccurate choices made on whom can be the Advanced Students cant be undone, and is held fully responsible for. The actions of all Heads are also the responsibillity of the Archmage. If one of their actions causes problems for one of the Matrons or the Valsharess, then that person and the Archmage are held personally responsible for it.

The Archmage is also personally responsible for all the full members of Sorcere. If any of their actions cause offence or disrespect to any of the Matrons or the Valshares then those persons and the Archmage are personally held responsible for those actions.
